Higher Ed Live is excited to welcome our new host Christen Gowan, director of digital strategy at Union College, on Marketing Live.

Christen Gowan joins Andrew Cassel, Kin Sejpal, and Rob Zinkan as co-host on Marketing Live.

Christen Gowan is a member of the Communications and Marketing team at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. As director of digital strategy, she manages the College’s social media channels and marketing video production. She leads digital marketing efforts at the College, engaging Union’s online audiences, and serves as an advisor to senior staff and the president on their online presence.

Christen has served as a CASE volunteer for the last several years, working on the District II conference marketing committee and judging the Accolades Awards.

Prior to joining Union in 2010, she covered various beats as a daily news reporter for the Albany Times Union. She received her bachelor’s degree in communications and journalism from the University at Albany.

“I am so excited to have Christen on board. She’s an advocate for thoughtful, proven digital strategies. She was a newspaper reporter in her past life–so I know she’ll be asking all the right questions.” — Ashley Budd, broadcast producer, Higher Ed Live

What are you most excited about for this new role?

I’m most excited to feature the hard and great work of smaller higher education institutions. I definitely draw inspiration from larger institutions, but working at a small liberal arts college has shown me how to be creative on a smaller budget. I think it would be great to hear more from more colleagues at institutions like Union and showcase how they navigate higher education with smaller teams and smaller budgets.

When you have 30 minutes free, how do you pass the time?

Free time at home usually means I’m baking something. I grew up in a family of bakers and I once won the blue ribbon with my mom’s apple pie at the Saratoga County Fair Pie Baking Competition while covering the fair for the Albany Times Union. At Union, I’m the reigning champ for the College Relations Holiday Dessert Swap, too. It’s just always something I find to be pretty relaxing and I love learning new recipes and techniques.

What is most rewarding about your job?

I love being able to see impact in what I do. I’m a very strategic, purpose-driven person so I love being able to drive real results with campaigns that I’ve created. Whether it’s for advancement, admissions or another office on campus, being able to help move Union’s strategic priorities forward is very rewarding to me.

Favorite TV show?

I feel like a lot of people will say this, but right now it’s definitely “Game of Thrones.” I actually didn’t even start the entire series until March of this year (the FOMO got very real), and now I’m totally hooked.
