This week on Student Affairs Live, we will be talking about Marketing and Communications in Student Affairs with three very special guests: Kat Shanahan, Promotions Coordinator for the James R. Connor University Center at the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater ; James McHaley, Assistant Director for Student Affairs Marketing at Northwestern University; and Liz Gross, Social Media Strategist at Great Lakes Educational Loan Services in Madison, WI.

The panel and I will have a in-depth conversation about the need for more formal departments focused on marketing and communication in Student Affairs and the benefits to students, faculty and staff when these services are present.  We are all very excited to have this conversation!

Kat Shanahan is the Promotions Coordinator for the James R. Connor University Center at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. In this role, Kat oversees the UC Graphics & Marketing department, manages the union’s integrated marketing communications campaign, and assists with student development and student employee programs. Additionally, Kat works heavily in branding, social media, and technology. Kat earned BAs in Multimedia Digital Arts and Advertising from UW-Whitewater and is pursuing a MS in Integrated Marketing Communications from West Virginia University.


As the Assistant Director of the Norris Center for Student Affairs Marketing, James is responsible for promoting Northwestern University’s Division of Student Affairs and its departments through effective and purposeful integrated marketing campaigns. From social media to web to print to branding, his team is responsible for engaging and informing the NU community. 

Through various volunteer roles with the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), I have further developed my leadership and communication skills by leading and collaborating with colleagues from other Universities both regionally and nationally.

Specialties:Social media engagement strategies; marketing to the college audience; running a department as a small ad agency; creating successful, creative campaigns; graphic design; web design.

Liz recently became the social media strategist at Great Lakes Educational Loan Services. Previously, she was the director of university marketing and communication at UW-Waukesha and the program outreach coordinator for university housing at UW-Milwaukee. Liz has overseen traditional and digital marketing campaigns at both the departmental and campus level. Her recent speaking engagements include the Central Wisconsin Social Media Conference and the American Marketing Association Symposium for the Marketing of Higher Education.
